14th St NW: What Do You Want More Of?

What kind of stores and businesses do you want more of on the 14th Street NW corridor… between Thomas Circle and Florida Avenue NW? You can pick as many as you want.

  1. Creeps, snobs? Seems to me that someone who thinks he owns the market on what is best is a snob, and in this case his choice of words demonstrates poor breeding and a failure to understand how to communicate with neighbors who are entitled in this democracy to their own views (and many of us have lived here more than 20 years, so toss that card in the discard!).
I too would like more small green spaces, fewer unfrequented bank fronts, reall delicatessens… and more dog owners not behaving like thoughtless slobs. Galleries are fine; I just don’t see how you keep them open in this economic climate.

  2. I would like to see more reasonably priced restaurants, but not necessarily chains and definitely not a McDonald’s!

  3. I’d love to see a vegetarian restaurant open, as long as it’s wheelchair-accessible. For some reason, all the local eateries with decent vegetarian offerings have steps, leaving Whole Foods the only place a vegetarian who can’t climb steps can get a bite to eat. As much as I like Whole Foods, I see it as a place to buy INGREDIENTS, not actual meals, so an ADA-compliant sit-down vegetarian restaurant would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

  4. This poll is much more narrow than the original question, “what do we want more of here?”. I don’t only want more businesses. I want a few little green spaces, like the area that used to exist at the corner of 13th and U before the cheesy building housing Starbucks and Quiznos filled it in and the trees were cut down. This is an arid few blocks. What about a small park with benches?

  5. Something good for the ground floor at 14th & Florida (Solea & View 14).

  6. Police….

Things will come to an area that’s safe.

People will not frequent stores/restaurants in an unsafe area.

  7. We need more of the great development that’s been happening. We need to NOT allow creeps to kill development and urbanization as the DCCA has been allowed to kill 17th St. Those boring snobs seem to have a vision of Springfield Va. Please just move there if that’s what you want. People like me who’ve lived in this zone for 20 years are thrilled and want more.

  8. I voted, but wanted to offer my two cents on what we don’t need: pharmacies and bank branches!

  9. My mind boggles at the fact that anyone would vote for “Furniture and Home Stores”. Fourteenth Street is already completely choked with them. That’s the absolute last thing the street needs.

One other thing to keep in mind: we’re going to be much shorter on art galleries very soon. The building at 14th and P that houses several is undergoing a crisis. G Fine Arts, one of the more significant galleries present on that block, has recently announced that it’ll be closing.
