El Sol is located at 1930 9th Street NW in what is known as Little Ethiopia, but the menu is Mexican-Salvadoran. The food has great reviews is has affordable prices.

Rice Restaurant, is located at 1608 14th Street NW. Always a favorite of ours. The menu is delicious with a variety of East and Southeast Asian choices… the food is beautifully presented with a very nice atmosphere. Make reservations if you are planning to go on a weekend.

Solly’s is located at 1942 11th Street NW, and it is a place to go and have a beer or three; your neighborhood bar… very laid-back atmosphere. Don’t count on getting any food there.

Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant & Sushi Bar, at 2020 Florida Ave. NW. We have eaten there a couple of times and the food has always been wonderful and fresh, with a good variety of Chinese, Japanese and Thai. It is a good bet and reasonably priced. But, they have a somehow sketchy and confusing web page to order online. Take a close look at the menu online before calling for a delivery.

Azi’s Cafe, at 1336 9th Street NW. This is one of the pioneer business in the Shaw area. Their coffee is great and the service superb. They have a selection of sandwiches, soups and salads for the rest of the day. If you feel like a light meal, always a good spot.

La Tomate, Italian Bistro, 1701 Connecticut Ave. NW. Italian food, relatively pricey. It has a great location on the Dupont Circle area with nice outdoor seating. Make reservations. The reviews are mixed, but the place is always crowded.

Barbara Cook’s Spotlight: Jane Krakowski” is Oct. 3 at the Kennedy Center, 2700 F Street  NW. A theater cabaret performance.

Donnell Rawlings’ Ashy Larry” from Comedy Central’s “The Chappelle Show,” at the DC IMPROV, 1140 Connecticut Ave. NW. Shoujld be good.

David Sedaris, Wed. Oct 7, at the Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st Street, NW: “With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.” Sedairs is a favorite of many friends. Saturday Stuff: A Family Play Day… Free Dog Training Session

You may notice that by putting these two events in one posting that I am playing to a stereotype of Borderstan: a place where outsiders believe dogs are more important than kids. Well, tough. It’s been a long week and I don’t feel like doing two separate postings. So, here is an event for families with kids and an event for families with dogs. Continue reading

Borderstan Weekend September 26/27

U-topia at 1418 U Street NW is a great spot on the U street corridor. Jazz and art come together to help you celebrate an excellent meal… Brazilian jazz on Thursdays, 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

La Carbonara at 1926 9th Street NW is in Shaw’s Little Ethiopia. This recently opened Italian restaurant has received mix reviews, from excellent to bland, perhaps depending on the day of the week. If you are feeling adventuresome, give it a try and let us know.

Local 16, at 1602 U Street NW is a nice place to go during the week. The weekend is totally different and it can get crowded and uncomfortable. The menu is American food with an Italian influence. Local 16 has a beautiful roof top deck.

“Ink Storm” at Transformer Gallery, 1404 P Street NW: “This exhibition highlights how artists CHEN Shaoxiong, DAI Guangyu, and Paula TSAI, three emerging Beijing based artists who re-interpret and re-invent traditional Chinese uses of ink through video, drawing, and mixed-media installation, incorporate ink into their work, ink, and how each individual exploration offers compelling contributions to contemporary art discourse.”

Mirage Series” by Steve Alderton at Touchstone Gallery, 406 7th Street NW: “The series includes portraits, cityscapes, still-lifes, and landscapes. One landscape includes what appears to be two farm structures viewed from across a field; the hot, shimmering light of a summer’s day has had its effects. Another painting shows a cityscape, with a mass of loosely rendered buildings. In both works, the atmosphere has seemingly blurred many of the specifics—but there is enough information in the watery images to transfix and invite one in. The artist’s technique successfully conveys the essence of his message, but also effectively leaves room for personal interpretation. The result is strong and engaging.” Continue reading

Crimes of Note… Gun Robbers Arrested… Safety in Numbers

Here are recent crimes of note in Police Service Areas (PSAs) 208, 307 and 305 for September 7-12 period in the Dupont Circle, U Street and Logan Circle areas. Crimes of note are stolen autos, burglaries and violent crimes such as robberies and assaults.

There has been a rash of gun robberies over the past few weeks in PSAs 307 and 305 in the area south of U Street between 9th and 14th Streets NW. Last Monday, September 8, PSA 307 officers arrested suspects for two robberies that occurred around 13th and Q NW.

From MPD Third District: “Earlier this evening [September 8] there were two armed robberies of two separate victims in the 1300 block of Q Street NW. The Third District Robbery Tactical unit was patrolling in the area and due to the officer’s swift action arrested the robbery suspects and recovered the handgun that was used during the commission of the crime. As a result of the arrests, other victims will be contacted in efforts to close other area robberies.”

In addition, here is an important note from MPD Third District above safety in numbers on the street… in regard to the second crime listed below (the Robbery-Purse Snatch on September 12): “This is an example of how you cannot always count on safety in numbers. The suspect was brazen enough to snatch the victim’s purse in the presence of multiple friends. When you pass strangers on the street always maintain a good grip on the strap or handle of your bag. If it becomes apparent that the suspect is not going to give up their effort to snatch your bag then release it and yell for help rather than continuing the confrontation.”
