Dupont Italian Kitchen at 1637 17th Street NW is a ” classic” in the neighborhood. Always a good bet for fast, affordable food with good, basic Italian dishes. Just do not expect more. It is a great place to sit on the patio and watch people go by on 17th Street.

Creme Cafe at 1322 U Street NW has now been open for four years with its wonderful offer of “home-cooked” meals. We ate there once and the food was delicious… sort of a mix of southern flavors. If you are feeling like soul food, you should give it a try.

Fernando Amorin‘s work is at International Visions, 2629 Connecticut Avenue NW: “You will find that Amorin’s tapestries, which take several months to create, are infused with energy and passion. This young man’s ability to create such detail and dimension proves that he is well on his way to establishing himself as a master of his craft.”

My Space on 7th” is a group exhibition featuring 90 local artists: “Touchstone Gallery has been an artist-owned gallery for more then 30 years. The gallery moved in 1996 to its current spacious location at 7th and D Streets NW, in downtown Washington. This 3,000-plus square-foot location is based in the center of the art scene, and is a short walk from the recently renovated and reopened National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum and The National Gallery of Art.”

Kenney Chesney performs on Saturday, August 29, at Nissan Pavillion, 7800 Cellar Door Drive in Bristow, VA. Don’t miss a concert that promises to be fun with great songs (I like him).

B.B. King plays on Sunday, August 30, at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap… a great way to end the weekend.

Acts of Love” is a series at the Church Street Theater, 1742 Church Street NW. A show that is part of the series and closing this weekend is “False Romance: An Intergalactic Farce” by Joe Baker.

Paco Diez performs Sunday, August 30, at the Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center: “Guitarist Paco Díez, one of the most important musicians in Judeo-Spanish music, has been decorated by the Sephardic authorities (ANL) for his work in spreading Sephardic music and culture.”

Steam Cafe at 1701 17th Street NW has become a morning stop for many locals… to get fresh croissants—plain, chocolate and pecan (think pecan pie on a croissant). Steam has an extensive menu with salads, crepes, pasta and paninis. Service is always friendly and it’s a good place to enjoy a cup of coffee outdoors. You can never go wrong with them.

French Bistro recently opened at 1727 Connecticut Avenue NW. In a city with so many restaurants it is hard to be a good “French Bistro” and it has received mix reviews, but it is worth a try. Good prices.

Dirty Blonde” is playing at the Signature Theatre, 4200 Campbell Avenue in Arlington: “Half celeb-bio and half examination of America’s fascination with celebrity, ‘Dirty Blonde’ is a smart, tough and tenderhearted comedy” (The New York Times). “It reveals the individual behind Mae West’s sexy celluloid façade and examines why lost souls like Jo are so mesmerized by the provocative sex goddess.”

Michael McDonald from MAD TV is at the DC IMPROV at 1140 Connecticut Avenue NW.

The Pretenders are playing at the Warner Theatre, August 14, 7:30 p.m., 1299 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Start the weekend enjoying their new album “Break Up The Concrete.”

Arturo Sandoval plays at Blues Alley at 1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW. He is a wonderful trumpeter… comfortable playing classic and jazz music and is true magic in live concerts. If you enjoy jazz, do not miss this concert.

Foody News: Masa 14 Coming to 14th Street

Saw this at Metrocurean, which picked it up from the Washington Post:

Back in April, a rumor surfaced on donrockwell.com that Kaz Okochi of Kaz Sushi Bistro and Richard Sandoval of Zengo (and more restaurants around the country) were partnering on a 14th Street restaurant. This afternoon over on the GOG Blog, Tom Sietsema got a green light from Okochi that the deal for the Latin-Asian-flavored Masa 14 is on. Which for this neighborhod resident is wonderful news. September is the target date, but the large space at 1825 14th St. NW is currently gutted.

I believe 1825 14th Street NW is just north of City Paws.

I have walked by there several times the past couple of days and didn’t even notice… Sushi Taro has reopened at the same location on 17th Street NW just above P Street. It had closed for a total renovation. I ate there twice a few years ago. It ain’t cheap, but it is excellent. Found this at Chowhound.

Good news in Borderstan restaurants. Cafe Salsa opened its doors Friday evening at 1712 14th NW, just north of R on the west side.

Luis and I happened to notice it was opening and got the last table in the first seating, at around 8:15. I am happy to report that we had a great meal.

The menu is eclectic Latin American—”Nuevo Latino Cuisine”—and similar to the owners’ first Cafe Salsa in Old Town Alexandria. Luis had a seafood dish… tuna, calamari and shrimp over mashed plantains.
