Paula Amt: Art and Business on the 14th Street Corridor

Paula Amt gallery plan b Luis Gomez Photos Logan Circle Borderstan

by Luis Gomez

Paula Amt is a true Borderstan entrepreneur: she lives in eastern Dupont and owns two businesses in western Logan Circle. Her first business was Framesmith DC, which opened in April 1999 in the carriage house at 1352 Q Street NW; the second was gallery plan b, which opened in March 2005 at 1530 14th Street NW.

The frame shop and the gallery are among a number of galleries that have come to the 14th Street corridor. Gallery plan b exhibits include photography, drawings, prints and sculpture. Amt features established artists as well as emerging local talent.

Borderstan: Why did you decide to go into business for yourself?

Amt: After having worked for a small business and commuting to Kensington, Maryland by Metro, I decided I wanted those three hours of my life back every day. I did not start these businesses because I am a “business person,” I started them because I wanted a little more independence—some might say “control”—and no commute, and to be working in the community in which I live.

Birch & Barley and ChurchKey at 1337 14th Street NW are two new additions to the 14th Street corridor of restaurants and bars. Birch & Barley offers what sounds like as a delicious menu in the high-priced range. Both of these places offer an extensive list of beers. We are still waiting to go. Let us know what you think.

Masa 14 is at 1825 14th Street NW and is another new addition to the neighborhood, offering Latin-Asian inspired cuisine in small plate offerings. Ever since its soft opening last week the place has been full every night (I walk by regularly). It is beautiful inside and I was able to photograph it last Sunday. Reservations are recommended. Again, we are still waiting to go; let us know what you think if you have already been.

Teaism at 2009 R Street NW is a favorite around the neighborhood with a nice selection of teas and wonderful food. Perfect for a weekend brunch with a great and fast service—I had a very good meal last Sunday.

Borderstan Weekend September 19/20

Here are my picks for things to do during the weekend in Borderstan, really close by or in the city… restaurants, galleries and theater.

Ulah Bistro, located at 1214 U Street NW, has become a destination place in the U street corridor… delicious food and great prices. If you go once, you are sure to return.

Vinoteca, Wine Bar & Bistro, 1940 11th St. NW. Jose Manuel (my wine expert) says it is the perfect place to learn about wines. Has a great menu with a nice selection of charcuterie and cheeses.

Nellie’s Sport Bar, 900 U Street NW. This is a mix of gay bar, sports bar and neighborhood restaurant. Nellie’s has TV screens everywhere so you can follow your favorite teams. During the weekends the rooftop terrace is the place to be: crowed, noisy and fun.

Zero Hour” at the Jewish Community Center, 1529 16th Street NW: “Channeling Zero Mostel’s wild moods, crazy humor and righteous anger, Jim Brochu reintroduces us to this funny, fantastically contrary man whose penchant for truth-telling has been sorely missed.”

Phèdre” is at the Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F Street NW. Helen Mirren stars in Phèdre, an adaptation of Racine’s tragedy.

Dublin Carol” at the H Street Playhouse, 1365 H St. NE: “Set in present-day Dublin on Christmas Eve, Dublin Carol relates the story of John Plunkett, a funeral parlor worker. John recounts memories of the drinking and womanizing of his youth with his younger assistant Mark. However, when his estranged daughter Mary arrives with sobering news, he is forced to face the more disastrous side of his past. Dublin Carol is a dark Irish comedy that follows John as he takes stock of his choices and their consequences—leaving us all more aware of our own lives and mortality.” – H Street Playhouse

Borderstan Weekend August 1st/2nd

Here are some suggestions of things to do during the weekend in Borderstan, really close by or in the city.

Florida Avenue Grill, at 11th Street and Florida Ave. NW. (Photo:Luis Gomez)

Florida Avenue Grill is perfect for a weekend breakfast with wonderful home-style food at a very good price. At the corner of 11th Street and Florida Avenue NW, it has been a fixture in the area for years.

Lauriol Plaza at 1835 18th Street NW is probably one of the best places in town to enjoy Latin American food. Get there early for brunch, lunch or dinner; good prices for the food and service, but it is usually crowded.

Bohemian Caverns, Tribute to Nina Simone

Bohemian Caverns: "Tribute to Nina Simon." (Photo: Luis Gomez.)

“FuckingA” is playing at the Studio Theatre, 1501 14th Street NW. “A bloody, modern riff on The Scarlet Letter, as only Suzan-Lori Parks could do it—with wicked poetry, biting comic songs and unforgettable style. In ‘Fucking A,’ Parks takes a wild, theatrical carnival ride through a post-apocalyptic future, where an outcast abortionist will do anything to reclaim her lost son.”

See “Tribute To Nina Simone” on Friday, July 3t, at the Bohemian Caverns at 2001 11 Street NW. “Blessed with a beautiful voice and a marvelous craft, Akua Kyerematin’s musical roots run deeply through the blues, jazz and R&B, her style, thus, is a fluid and constantly evolving neo-soul conglomeration that stresses jazz and the blues. Look closely at Akua Kyerematin today, for you will surely be hearing huge things about her tomorrow.”
