PSA 307: Violent Crime Down 17% in 2008


For Police Service Area (PSA) 307, violent crime decreased 17% in 2008. However, total crime decreased only 1%, due to a 2% increase in property crimes; the rise in property crimes was in thefts from autos and stolen autos.

Generally, PSA 307 encompasses the Logan Circle neighborhood and parts of Shaw. East Borderstan is part of PSA 307 (from 14th to 15th and P to S Streets NW). West Borderstan (15th to 16th Streets) is part of PSA 208.

Highlights and a table with detailed numbers follow.

PSA 307 Highlights

  • Violent crime declined for the second year in a row in PSA 307. It was down 17% in 2008 after declining 10% in 2007. At the end of 2008, violent crime had declined 25% since the end of 2006, from 199 incidents in 2006 to 150 incidents in 2008.
    • The number of robberies in PSA 307 declined 12% in 2008. Total number of robberies by year: 118 in 2006, 117 in 2007 and 103 in 2008.
    • The number of assaults with a dangersous weapon (with and without a gun) decreased for the second year in a row. Assaults decreased 26% in 2008 after decreasing 32% in 2007; assaults are down 35% in PSA 307 over the past two years. Number of assaults with a dangerous weapon by year: 75 in 2006, 53 in 2007 and 39 in 2008.
    • The number of gun crimes decreased 44% in 2008 in PSA 307. Total number of gun crimes by year: 39 in 2006, 41 in 2007 and 23 in 2008.
  • Total property crime increased 2% in 2008 after dropping 14% in 2007, with increases in thefts from autos and stolen autos
    • The number of burglaries plummeted by 44% in 2008 after dropping 13% in 2007. Total number of burglaries by year in PSA 307: 181 in 2006, 157 in 2007 and 88 in 2008. Burglaries are down 51% in the past two years.
    • Thefts in PSA 307 decreased 12% in 2008 after rising 16% in 2007. Thefts by year: 242 in 2006, 281 in 2007 and 248 in 2008.
    • Thefts from autos shot up 38% in 2008 after dropping substantially by 32% in 2007. The result is that thefts from autos have decreased only 5% in the past two years.
    • The number of stolen autos in 2008 in PSA 307 jumped 11% in 2008 after falling 9% in 2007.
  • For 2008, total crime in PSA 307 dipped 1% from 2007 thanks to a healthy drop in violent crime. For the past two years, total crime is down 14% due to a more noticable 13% drop in 2007.
