PSA 208: Violent Crime Down 4% in 2008


For Police Service Area (PSA) 208, violent crime decreased 4% in 2008. However, property crime jumped 9%, which means that total crime increased 7% in 2008 in PSA 208. The big increase was thefts from autos, which shot up 28% in 2008. 

Generally, PSA 208 takes in the Dupont Circle and Kalorama neighborhoods. West Borderstan is part of PSA 208 (from 15th to 16th and P to S Streets NW) while East Borderstan (14th to 15th Streets) is part of PSA 307.

PSA 208 Highlights

  • Violent crime declined 4% in 2008 after rising about 4% in 2007. At the end of 2008, the number of violent crimes in PSA 208 was almost exactly the same as two years ago. Total violent crime incidents by year: 279 in 2006, 289 in 2007 and 276 in 2008.
    • The number of robberies (with and without a gun) in PSA 208 declined about 4% from 198 to 191; there were 172 robberies in 2006.
    • The number of assaults with a dangerous weapon (with and without a gun) decreased for the second year in a row in PSA 208. Assaults decreased 2% in 2008 after decreasing 16% in 2007; assaults are down 18% over the past two years. Number of assaults with a dangerous weapon by year: 96 in 2006, 81 in 2007 and 79 in 2008.
    • The number of gun crimes decreased 32% in 2008 in PSA 208. Total number of gun crimes by year: 57 in 2006, 60 in 2007 and 41 in 2008. Over the past two years, gun crimes are down 28% in PSA 208.
  • PSA 208 total property crime increased 9% in 2008 after essentially no increase in 2007.
    • The number of burglaries increased 9% in 2008 after dropping 25% in 2007. Total number of burglaries by year in PSA 208: 233 in 2006, 175 in 2007 and 191 in 2008. As a result, burglaries are down 18% in the past two years.
    • Thefts in PSA 208 decreased 3% in 2008 after spiking 20% in 2007. Thefts by year: 797 in 2006, 953 in 2007 and 928 in 2008.
    • Thefts from autos shot up 38% in 2008 after dropping substantially by 12% in 2007. 
    • The number of stolen autos in 2008 in PSA 208 has decreased the last two years from 191 in 2006 to 168 in 2007 and 143 in 2008. This translates to a 12% decrease in 2007 and a 15% decrease in 2008; over two years the number of stolen autos has declined by 25% in PSA 208.
  • For 2008, total crime in PSA 208 was up 7%, driven by a 9%-increase in property crimes—particularly thefts from autos, which were up 32% in 2008. Over the past two years, total crime in PSA 208  is up a bit under 8%.
